CRAFT Pattern: Sally Cardigan

Banner Craft Podcast

A Nostalgic Honeycomb Sweater
By Nikol Lohr

Inspired by an Atomic-age children's sweater and named after Mad Men's Sally Draper, this playful fitted cardigan with retro styling is surprisingly simple to knit. The three-quarter length sleeves make it a perfect transition sweater for crisp spring or fall days, the angora-blend yarn softens the pattern and adds to the nostalgic feel, and the crocheted buttonholes add to the overall charm.

While the honeycomb pattern looks like complicated colorwork, producing it is actually as easy as knitting stripes! Only one color is carried at a time, with the design achieved by slipping stitches from the previous round's color. (If you're one of the thousands who have knit the Mason-Dixon Knitting dishcloths, you already know the technique.) It is knit seamlessly in the round, so there's no seaming, purling, or complicated float management. Then it's steeked to make the front opening (cutting your knitting is scary but fun!), and a button placket is picked up just inside the cut edges.

Knit TARDIS Blanket

TARDIS_knit_blanket.jpg

Carrie Fritsche knit this awesome 9-foot by 6-foot TARDIS blanket as a birthday gift for her sister.

After unsuccessfully looking for a TARDIS chart on the internet, I ended up making the pattern from scratch. It was knit in one large piece and has an attached fleece backing.

You can find the free PDF pattern over on Ravelry. Thanks, Kristin!

Check it out! Glee-inspired slushie cupcakes that Tamara (Athens, GA) of Cupcakes by Tamara made for her Glee second season premiere party last fall. Recipe: Mojito Float

CRAFT: Feast and Frolic

By Jessica Wilson

Spring is the time when the mint begins to emerge, and there's not much I like more than a bit of minty goodness, unless it has lime in it as well. Nothing brings on the mint and lime better than a refreshing mojito. Mojitos are the perfect combination of a little sweet and a little sour, and I've upped the ante by turning the classic mojito into a float. Be warned, these things are tasty!

Call for Knitters/Crocheters for Forest, For the Trees Exhibit

Fiber artist Amy Caterina has a call for artist for her upcoming Forest, For the Trees exhibit slated for November this year. Anyone is invited to contribute a piece which will form part of a cohesive whole that will remain intact. More information on the exhibit and how to contribute are on Amy's blog, Free Range Knitting or the Forest Facebook page.

Amy writes:

This exhibition hopes to address the wonders and perils of the forest by creating an environment which is at once unique and fantastic, dangerous and bizarre, and by acknowledging that one day the built environment may be all that's left us.
We are looking for all types of yarn art relating to our forest, and encourage both novice and expert crafters with open arms. Who knows what lurks within the deepest, darkest parts of the forest; trees, groundcover, animals, monsters, aliens, maybe a taco plants or two. We'd love to see works which are funny, socially conscience, use unusual materials and/or push the knit/crochet envelope. Recycled knit and fiber materials are encouraged.

How-To: Sew A Slipcover

reupholster_chair.jpg

I recently scored some awesome mid-century occasional chairs at a garage sale that will be perfect for our 1961 ranch home that we are currently renovating. At less than $50 for the pair, they were a steal, but they'll eventually need to be reupholstered. Until I can afford to have a professional do the job, the idea of creating a nice custom slipcover is very appealing. I've always been a little daunted by the idea, but this in-depth tutorial from Rachelle of Adventures in Creating for Remodelaholic has me thinking I might be able to tackle it after all. It's still a lot of work, but breaking it in to steps and taking my time would give us some very satisfying results. [via Re-Nest]

Deconstructed "Dress Boy" Chairs

chairs_deconstructed_3.jpg

Chairs are kind of like puppies. They seem to follow you home. On street corners, in thrift shops, at garage sales -- there is no shortage of slightly worn, perfectly lovable seats just waiting to go to a good home. And if you're like me, and you can't say no, pretty soon you'll be running out of floor space. I mean, how many dinner guests can you expect when you live in 500 square feet?

Solution? Deconstruction. I love this exceptionally simple and clever tutorial by IkeaHacks for turning your unsittable chairs into what they end up being most days anyway: coat hooks. This project is based off the Dutch design studio Laphoeff's "Dress Boys" (below). For more deconstructed chair ideas, be sure to check out Design Sponge's "Treasure Hunting: Chairs" post. Most excellent.

The Rainbow Project

The one good thing that's come out of the disaster in Japan is the wonderful and creative relief efforts people are launching all over the world. (See Lish's post, Crafters Come Together for Japan Relief Efforts.) I really like the Rainbow Project as well. The idea is simple: "By uploading your own photograph of a rainbow and making a donation, you will connect with communities around the world. Each photograph that is uploaded will become part of unified rainbow and as we go along, these images will be collaged together, forming one harmonious rainbow that represents cosmic solidarity." I particularly like the drawn rainbows and the rainbow eyeshadow image! I'd love to see more crafty rainbows (cake! scarves! felt!).

Recipe: Scones for Cream Tea

CRAFT: Feast and Frolic

creamtea_main.jpg

By Andrew Lewis

Cream tea is a real English treat, consisting of scones, clotted cream, jam, tea, and (occasionally) bread and butter. Most tea shops offer cream tea on their menu, and it would be difficult to imagine a trip to the seaside without stopping for cream tea somewhere along the promenade.

It would also be difficult to imagine anything more satisfying than sitting down in a steamy tea room in the middle of winter and ordering a cream tea to restore the life to frozen limbs.

There is no reason why you can't enjoy a cream tea at home, provided that you have all of the necessary ingredients. You can find jam and clotted cream at most convenience stores, and scones are very easy to make. I usually find that guests enjoy two scones as part of a cream tea, although one scone is perfectly acceptable if you have provided a full afternoon tea with sandwiches and boiled eggs.

The recipe below will make about six large scones, and you should expect your guests to use about half a pound of jam and half a pound of clotted cream between them. If you are providing bread and butter, add a little more jam to your calculations.

The signs of spring are showing in the produce section of the grocery store and I couldn't be happier. I am ready to say farewell to root vegetables and hearty meals in favor of lighter, fresher-tasting fruits and vegetables now that winter is coming to a close.

Despite many fruits and vegetables being available year-round, it is important to learn what is in season where you live.

Lamps from Discarded X-Mas Trees

flume-et-al-2.jpg

Discarded Christmas trees are a blight on Brooklyn curbs in January, even well into February. Local designers in et al. collaborative took it upon themselves to turn these dead decorations into something more lovely, and came up with these lamps called fLume.

Influenced by themes of revival, nostalgia and nature, the trees have been returned to the focal point of light in the home as lamps. et al.'s found materials come not only from holiday trees, but also fallen from storms, and discarded from landscaping projects. Each of the trees is carefully stripped of its branches and pine needles, which are donated to a neighboring rooftop garden for mulch. The fLume lamps are minimalist and organic, staying true to form. The pieces are intended for display according to what suits their natural shape; table top, hanging and floor standing. Each piece is one of a kind and uses exposed filament bulbs of various shapes and sizes.

Make a Book a Day

Woah, great project! Make a Book a Day:

I'm Donna Meyer and this is a Daily Journal of a Challenge: to make a book a day for a year, to stretch my imagination, creativity, skills and discipline. Inspired by Noah Scalin's Skull-a-Day. Why books? A book can be made of almost anything, and I can stretch its definition. Some will be fancy, skilled and take time. Others will be quick-&-dirty, maybe just images, or ephemeral, disappearing books. Follow along. We'll discover together how to create a book a day for 365 days.

[Thanks, Johngineer!]
