what I?ve learned so far from having a flooded house

About 24 hours after I got back from my trip to New York I was standing under streams of water coming from the ceiling of my sewing studio. The water was there because our hot water heater had failed rather dramatically, and the water was in streams because the flood control guy had poked a few dozen holes in the ceiling to let the water out. Our poor house with it's surprisingly watertight foundation had been flooded from the inside. (Dramatic music queue here.) I got to make a phone call to a plumbing service where I actually opened by saying "Hello, I am having a plumbing emergency!" Happily the guy on the other end was way more in control than I was and talked me through the process of turning off the water to where it was leaking from.

As I type this all of our stuff is has been migrated into areas of the house that managed to avoid the deluge. I cannot get to my television or the computer that holds most of my files, or to the window for that reason. Our bathroom sink is on the back porch. Startlingly large portions of our Pergo is in a trash dump somewhere. The picture above is the view over my laptop looking at the contents of my office closet that are currently in hoarder-like piles in the dining room. Industrial strength dehumidifiers, blowers (they look like giant hair dryers) and heaters are chugging away for three to seven days to dry out all the soaked bits of wood and drywall that I now know what look like from the inside. Our living room carpet ripples like water when you walk over it since it's lifted by a cushion of hot air. Our office and bathroom are currently 125 degrees to dry out the layers of wood beneath the flooring. We have these many yellow tubes delivering hot dry air into the space above the ceiling and it looks incredibly creepy. If I could keep this around through Halloween I'd totally throw a party in this room.

But you know what? It could have been so much worse and we've kept in perspective. Drinking has certainly been involved. So far we've paired initial shock with tequila, waiting for the asbestos test with beers and the presence of giant heaters with chilled white wine on the deck. I've slept really well because we have white noise machines running on both floors of our house. It's surprisingly exhausting having work people tinker around your house all day, waiting for this company to do X so that they can do Y. The other night we decided it was very late and we started getting ready for bed only to find it was 9:30 at night.

Here are a few things I've learned, or at least think I've learned, from this experience:

Tradespeople will try to help you if they can since they've seen this many times before, but there are limits to what they're allowed to outright tell you. If they seem to be speaking carefully or in a code it's because they are, so listen closely. One of our guys actually had to ask me the same question three times with his straight man comedy timing intact before I figured out what he was trying to communicate. (He was also a ringer for Paul Blackthorne and I expected he would pull out a hockey stock/wizard staff at any moment.)

Your homeowners insurance might cover the extra electricity used by all the machines that are drying out your house. Both our flood guy and our insurance lady let us know about this. Which is good because it's taking a lot of power. As in, we turned on a fan the other day and our lights dipped. We had to unplug the stove (yay for the excuse to get take out!) to allow access to our only 220 outlet for the big heaters.

Don't be afraid to push for more aesthetically pleasing solutions. Because I insisted that an overflow pipe run through the back wall of a closet instead of through the closet itself the flood guy was able to have a good view of what was going on with the flooring under our tub, and as a result we might not have to rip up a large portion of our bathroom floor to see under there. Also, resale value is a very legit argument. Also, nothing the previous homeowners had done will make any sense, brace yourselves.

You will suddenly become unsentimental. I have so much stuff! Where did this stuff come from? I think if I had a removal company come take it all away I wouldn't miss it. Or much of it. I am seriously considering a move to minimalist after this. Or maybe just ruthless. We'll see.

And so, wise and experienced people, have you had a big and inconvenient house disaster? What did you learn from it? School the rest of us so that we will be prepared!

what I?m up to

Stuff is going on! It's very exciting.

I contributed a project to 10 Simple Sunday Afternoon Crafts [1] which is published over on the shiny new Kirtsy, whose redo launched earlier this week. Lookin' good ladies. Huge thanks to Blogstar [2] for inviting me along. I showed how I use woodgrain contact paper [3] to repurpose various tins to use around the house. Yes that is a band-aid on my finger and it got there due to a paper cut unrelated to my project and the various sharp edged metal things I had been wielding for it.

Make Grow Gather [4] had me on for an episode of Lazy Summer Radio [5] and I talked about how much I like to find four leaf clovers. (The one pictured above was found in my front yard just last week.) Thanks again Kelly, come back soon!

For the next few weeks I'll be participating in a Project Runway [6] challenge thanks to the good people at HP, who sent me a TouchSmart [7] computer! I'll be doing my own version of the challenges the contestants are given, at least in digital format. I'm completely underqualified to do this so the results might be, well, let's just go with interesting.

I'll also be keeping an eye on the Project Project Runway [8] girls (Just Crafty Enough [9] and Craftroom [10]) who recreate the challenges on dolls. I loved what they did last season and I'm glad they are doing it again.

I have a list of good stuff [11] over at Supermarket [12]. Narrowing it down to 10 items was very difficult, I have about a hundred more bookmarked. Seriously.

I'll be speaking at Schoolhouse Craft [13] here in Seattle. I'm doing a panel on blogging with Blair from Wise Craft [14] and Molly from Orangette [15]. We're doing Blogging 101 on Friday, Sept 23rd at 12:30. The conference will be a collection of great people talking about the business of craft. If you need a recharge this will be where to do it, I came away last year feeling more inspired than I had in a while.

My husband Scott [16] has a few notable shows coming up. He is 1/2 of Kin to Stars [17], the other half is the very awesome Jerin Falkner [18]. Their very first show is coming up in over a week at Egan's [19] in Ballard (Seattle) on Saturday, August 6th at 9p.m. More details [20] on their Facebook events page. See you there? He also plays with Explone [21] and among their upcoming shows is a benefit to help cover the medical costs of a great girl who needs some help: We Heart Tracy Dart [22] at The Bridge, 7pm on Sunday, August 7th.

May Birthday Giveaway: a CSA share from Juniper Moon Farm

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to say that Juniper Moon Farm [1] has offered a Yarn CSA [2] for one lucky reader, the 2012 Spring Shearing worth $175 (that's some serious yarn). The Yarn CSA works like a farm CSA but instead you get a yield of the scrumptious yarn that is produced from the sheep and goats they lovingly raise. Juniper Moon Farm is amazing run by a small group of people who are dedicated to what they do and are fantastic about sharing what is going on with share holders, visitors, and readers of their blog. The farm was started by Susan, whom I've followed since she started (back then it was the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm, which you might remember if you've been reading my site long enough) and I'm astounded and so pleased to watch how it's grown. If you're not already I encourage you to read the blog [3], follow along as lambs are born in the spring on the LambCams [4], see what the farm dogs [5] are up to, you can attend shearing day [6] and even stay at the farm [7] for a week or long weekend. It's really amazing to watch the farm work all year and then find yarn at your door that reflects all of the care and attention that they put into it. I just want to hug the whole farm. The blog isn't just about the farm, I've loved all the Probably Something You Would Like [8] links posts, her recent pictures from Preakness [9], her famous world's greatest granola recipe [10] and how she went paper towel free on the whole farm [11] (it involves making a lot of your own cloth napkins [12], enough so you always have plenty of clean ones).

Would you like to win this amazing Yarn CSA? If so please leave a comment with this entry and let me know the following: Have you ever spent time on a farm? I spent a few summers on my uncle's farm in Oklahoma, he had cattle, two greyhounds, a small lake with a rope swing, a tiny farmhouse and bales of hay that seemed to be piled taller than the house itself. I loved it there. Ok, you've got until Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [13] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

Fantasy Project Runway Challenge, episode 3: the one with stilts

What's going on here? HP [1] invited me to play along with the current season of Project Runway [2] and sent me a TouchSmart [3] computer to create my own designs. Along with creating designs I decided to write myself into the show. I am not doing well.

This week the challenge was to create a dramatic look to be worn while on stilts. Stilts! It was also a group challenge, so Scott and I worked together. In the fantasy Project Runway thing I have going on here he has immunity since winning last week [4], so I was feeling some real pressure. We came up with the look above, a dramatic suit. Or something. It was inspired by Mary Poppins:

(Image above from Disney.)

Instead of creating the orange suit you see above (which I was all for) we chose a warm gray with a touch of orange in the shirt. We were judged to be in the middle which was good enough for us. Our look was boring but well made. Our model could simply be a very, very tall girl heading to work anticipating a high pressure meeting.

We might or might not have had huge married couple screaming fights during this challenge but the audience will never know since the cameras were all over the Bert and Viktor [5] pairing. Our model looked a little bit like Jack Skellington [6] coming down the runway but luckily she didn't get the pumpkin hair [7], whew!

Here, in pen and paper sketches, is how we actually came around to Mary Poppins:

This is my first idea. Like many of the contestants I took one look at the stilts and thought circus!

Scott [8] had something out of China in mind. That cat earred squiggle thing? If this hadn't been a group challenge that is probably what he would have put down the runway just to show off his immunity.

We tried to do a form fitting dress over pants thing work. Maybe without sleeves? Then we gave up and tried to figure out if we could make really, really long flare jeans work. Then we looked at our sketches again and Scott liked the fitted thing but wondered if we could make it more like Mary Poppins. And so we did. Or at least we tried.

And now the answer to what we all want to know. What are the doodles on Scott's paper?

A cat and a sea serpent/unicorn? I think?

Previously: we took on episode one [9], the one with the bed sheets, and episode two [10], the one with the dog toys.

And another huge shoutout to HP [11] for sending me the TouchSmart computer [12]. Its big bright screen has seduced me. Today I found myself surfing sites with one hand (you can scroll a browser page just but drawing your finger up or down on the screen) while I scanned sketches with the other hand. It is surprising how quickly I took to abandoning the mouse for the touch controls.

the alphabet according to my browser

I recently found myself idly typing letters into my browsers location bar and noticing which sites it first suggests as an auto complete. So I made this list, which may or may not be an interesting alphabetic snapshot of the sites I've recently been visiting the most often. These don't reflect sites that I read obsessively in RSS and some results are surprising. (No Twitter or Pinterest? I'll have to figure out how that works.)

A: Alicia Paulson [1], who was lovely enough to offer a copy of her book for the May giveaways

B: The Beer Junction [2], a local beer shop and where I get Pliny the Elder and good advice on what other beer I might like (I'm an IPA lover)

C: Cliff Mass [3], a local weather guru

D: Design Mom [4], I love following her reports from France

E: Epiphanie Bags [5], those lovely camera bags all the cool bloggers have (is now a good time to tell you I have one too?)

F: Feedburner [6], I set up my feed through them before they became owned by Google, and I was so relieved that the switch over was seamless

G: Grassroots Business Association [7], the small business group I'm a committee member of

H: The Hairpin [8], it's where I get beauty advice [9] from a producer of This American Life (that sound? is a few of my worlds colliding)

I: IMDB [10], for all those "that guy" look ups, I also like their collection of news [11] for updates on what is going on in movies and TV with just enough celebrity gossip thrown in

J: Jordan Ferney [12], maker of excellent parties and surprises, and reporting from her move to Paris

K: Knox Gelatine [13], research for a current project

L: Luxirare [14], I'm in love with her posts about food [15]

M: Musings of a Muse [16], where I get my makeup reviews

N: NetShift [17], a neat little game made by foon, NetShift is the successor to BlackShift (which I liked even more but doesn't work on newer computers, sadly)

O: Gmail [18]. Wait, Gmail? Apparently I don't visit sites that have O in them? How about Mrs. O [19]? Tom and Lorenzo [20]? Overstock [21]? C'mon browser!

P: Posie Gets Cozy [22], Alicia again, I got sucked in by the adorable dog and kept reading

Q: Ask Metafilter [23], not surprising in the least as it's all Qs

R: Random.org [24], the number generator I use for giveaway winners

S: School House Craft [25], a conference here in Seattle that I'll be at to talk about blogging with Blair from Wise Craft [26] and Molly from Orangette [27]

T: Tom and Lorenzo [28], they who do Project Rungay and keep up commentary on all sorts of shows and red carpet events

U: Ugly Green Chair [29], Whitney is one of my oldest blog-to-real-life friends!

V: Voracious [30], a local Seattle food blog

W: WTF with Marc Maron on PRX [31], these are a selection of WTF podcasts trimmed down to fit in a usual public radio slot and I'm so happy to see they are being picked up by public radio stations across the US (you should request it of your local station, just a suggestion -- I also suggest you listen to the WTF [32] podcast if you don't already)

X: XKCD [33], I like this online comic so darn much

Y: YouTube [34], this one is a surprise as I really don't spend much time on the site, though I did watch this fun fan-made Portal video yesterday: Outside Aperture [35]

Z: Zappos [36], I recently panic-ordered a lot of shoes to try and they all arrived in one big box, it's so large I could curl up inside and ship myself back

photo: a sign painter

I was walking through the Georgetown neighborhood and spotted this nice guy painting a sign by hand. I stopped to ask if I could take a photo and mentioned I knew somebody who is making a film about people who paint signs by hand. "Faythe [1]?" He asked. Indeed. The world, it is small.

dailyish photo: my mixing bowls

My mixing bowls, from the outside in:

The big yellow bowl was purchased during the summer I worked in the costume shop of the Santa Fe Opera during college. My roommate and I bought this on a trip to Target when we realized we needed popcorn, booze and warm blankets to make it through the summer. The dry air and cold nights there resulted in me getting strep throat for the first time in my life. We didn't have a television in our apartment and I couldn't afford a computer so my roommate bought me one of those black and white flocked posters that come with markers for you to fill in, you can still find them in drug stores. It was a stained glass window, or something. I was so bored I spent hours trying to figure out how to fill it in so that none of the colors would be next to one another. I also read The Mists of Avalon. Twice.

The two largest orange bowls were purchased the second year that Scott and I lived in Seattle, when we rented a house in Ballard. It is a short walk away from where Delancey opened up after we moved away, how I wish we still lived there. It was a three-bowl set from Williams-Sonoma and buying them was one of those "I'm finally a grown up!" moments for me. After only a few weeks I broke the smallest bowl in the set, my favorite one, when I dropped it while doing dishes. It cracked right in half. Which make me feel not so much a grown up. The rubber feet on these bowls are light blue, a detail which I adore.

The medium orange bowl was purchased earlier this year at a Ross that opened in my neighborhood. The Ross was clean but shockingly sparse, more like mostly empty Goodwill. It was incredibly depressing and a bit disorienting. Suddenly there was this shiny orange melamine bowl looking like it was waiting just for me. Then I found a second shiny orange bowl a little further down on the shelf. They are just about the size of the bowl I broke, so I bought both.

The smallest four (orange, green, yellow, blue) were a birthday present from Scott last year and they make for very happy prep. The blue one is so cute and petite, it's smaller than a teacup, that I find myself just holding it because I find it so pleasing. Scott bought them at the Moma store while he was in New York with Kirby Krackle. He also visited Mood during that trip simply so that he could snap a picture for me. I wasn't jealous at all.

Fantasy Project Runway Challenge, episode 7: the one with fabric patterns

What's going on here? HP [1] invited me to play along with the current season of Project Runway [2] and sent me a TouchSmart [3] computer to create my own designs. Along with creating designs I decided to write myself into the show. I am not doing well.

This episode was the one where the designers create their own fabric design, get it printed and then use that to create a look. And this one was where they used HP computers like the TouchSmart [3] I have! My design is above and my swatch is here:

Here is what I had to say about what inspired my swatch: "In high school I was a bit of a misfit geek and loved the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of books by Douglas Adams (I even had the set of original radio show recordings!). The number 42 plays an important role in the stories and I still note when it pops up around me. I wanted to use it as a symbol but didn't want to slap 42 all over my fabric so I translated it into binary, cranked the kerning really tight so the numbers overlapped and then used that as a stripe. The sexy librarian look was inspired by my high school job as a page at my local library."

And here are the accessories from the Piper Lime accessories wall [5] that I chose:

Those shoes are almost exactly like the ones I wore to my very first job interview. That was the place where I ended up learning how to build websites. Ah, memories.

I'm going to have to skip the storytelling today my lovelies, we are dealing with this situation [6]. I went from Fashion Week to a flooded basement in less than 24 hours! It could have been far worse though, knock on wood (or Ikea particle board).

a visit with Wilton

Last week I had the opportunity of getting to visit the headquarters of Wilton [1] for a peek inside their operations, a bit of cake decorating instruction and a look at the frenzy of the annual Wilton tent sale. It was pretty neat.

The first thing I learned? I'm not so great at wielding a frosting tip. It's going to take a great many more hours of practice. We learned stars, rosettes, zig-zags, shells, vines, leaves and buds. I am only confident at leaves.

We learned how to do that nifty basket weave! It's more simple than you might suspect and is therefore worthy of showing off and pretending like it was a lot of work.

This is the camera crew who was around all day. At first I found it disconcerting but by the end of the day I might or might have not have been looking straight into the camera while wearing a tablecloth tied around my neck like a giant bib and saying "I like my dress more than I like my dignity." You may never know.

One of the new-to-me things from the day were these shaped rubber bands that easily hold the end of your pastry bag. So easy to use! So smart!

I also learned that I'm not a natural when it comes to working with fondant. I'm supposed to have a whole bunch more finished objects on that yellow square there. My final flower had a lot of assistance from the instructor. As in: she did it for me.

We got to take a tour of the props rooms, the photography studio and the studio space where the designers create camera perfect cakes (we weren't allowed to take photos in there since they were getting ready for future things, but oh my gosh I wish I could show you what their cake closet looks like, it's amazing.)

Then we had a short cake decorating competition! We had an hour to come up with a theme and decorate some pre-made papier mache cakes. Our team went with what we knew how to do, basket weave (learned about three hours earlier, mind you) and making use of the many pretty sugar flowers offered on the tables. You know what seems easier and faster than it is? Cake decorating. Know what's worse? Cake decorating with a film crew in the room. We barely finished in time. I have heaps of new respect for those people in the cake decorating competitions I see on television. I have to admit, though, it was a lot of fun.

We took a tour of the official Wilton School where they hold all the classes, and there was a class going on so it was really cool to get to see works in progress. They have a great setup with overhead cameras and giant screen so you can see the instructor's hands. I intend to return and learn how to blow sugar bubbles next year. The picture above is the only one I grabbed, it shows foam hair curlers propping open pieces of a fondant bow while it drives. Clever.

Afterward we took a tour of the test kitchens were Wilton assures that their recipes will turn out the same in your kitchen. They have a two sided kitchen, one with a gas stove and the other side with an electric stove. We were all crowded into it so I don't have a decent photo, but it was reassuring to see that they use the same household appliances we do.

One of my favorite things was the wall of Wilton history. Apparently the company was started to teach people how to decorate with boiled and pulled sugar! This black and white photo shows off decorated cakes that one must actually crack the surface of to get inside. (I so badly want to do this! A pinata cake, how fun!) Later they joined forces with frosting decorators and formed classes closer to what we'd think of today. In the Depression they practiced using mashed potatoes instead of buttercream since sugar was rationed.

We happened to be there during the annual Wilton Tent Sale. (Did you know this was a thing? I did not!) It was enormous, like visiting a Costco on Saturday afternoon full of nothing but cake decorating supplies that are 75% off. The best sellers? Clear vanilla and parchment paper, smart shoppers those. Not shown: the giant whoopie pie pans, and a whole stack of my personal favorite, the skull cake pan [2]. I talked two casual browsers into buying the skull cake pan while I stood there. Seriously.

Then it was off to dinner where all our cakes were displayed.

And our cake won an award! Ok, everybody's cakes won awards! We got "Most Contemporary". Go team contemporary! Huge shout out to Nosh With Me [3] and Mommy Hates Cooking [4] for being quick with the frosting and having quite the eye for flower placement. These awards were made from real fondant and frosting and somebody put a lot of work into making about thirty of them, so thanks, they were lovely.

You know what I didn't get? A lot of photographs of all the awesome people. Here is everybody I met (some in person at long last, some for the first time, everybody was amazing):

Thank you Wilton!

One last note: if you're ever going to take a cake decorating class don't wear a mostly-white dress. Trust me on this one.

what I?ve learned so far from having a flooded house

Know what?s good? Peanut butter cup S?mores.

S'mores made with peanut butter cups instead of the usual chocolate are pretty darn great. I forget where I first learned about this, I think it was a mention over on Pinterest [1].

Wanna hear the best thing I've learned in a while? Set the chocolate near the fire to melt while you're cooking your marshmallow to the the perfect puffy and golden brown state. That way the chocolate is nice and melty and the marshmallow has to do less work. This tip comes from Kyle [2], who is my new hero.

Missoni for Target

As you might know the Missoni for Target [1] stuff was briefly in stores earlier this week. I say briefly most reports it was all gone about an hour after the stores opened. Modern Kiddo [2] has a great report from the scene, complete with a spy picture from Shutterbean [3] showing some shopper taking four whole carts of stuff.

When I saw the Missoni line I saw something familiar. The picture above shows a skirt I bought from Erin MacLeod [4]. I think the skirt was made from a vintage fabric and is similar enough that when I put a picture [5] on Twitter last Thursday Natalie [6] asked if I was sitting in the Missoni for Target pop-up shop that was going on that evening. Sadly, no, I didn't make it to the pop-up shop.

By the time I made it to a Target the day it was released the shelves that formerly help Missoni items were bare. I encountered one other Missoni hopeful and by the time I left she'd only found one child's sweater. So, do you think Target will do another run of the Missoni stuff? Should we all brace ourselves for round two?
