May Birthday Giveaway: good stuff from Rakka Deer

Today I'm happy to have a bunch of goods from local artist Rakka Deer [1], aka Kris. She's got style and wit, and she's got a huge number of projects going on at any given time. It amazes me. Besides Rakka Deer [2] and her Etsy shop [3] she has 37 Confections [4], Stupid Fucking Awesome [5], Excheckered [6], Pax and Ak [7], Skull Diggery [8], Suspect and Fugitive [9], a Tumblr [10] and Glitter Pissing [11]. She's offering up some good stuff from her shop: a six pack of geek cards [12], a thread painting [13] and a six pack of Inigo Montoya [14] cards featuring a drawing she did of the character over a pile of Hello My Name Is stickers (this still makes me laugh).

And while I'm talking about Rakka Deer please allow me to mention this: Recently the town she grew up in was devastated by the tornadoes and flooding along the Mississippi so she's raising money by holding a Bake Sale for the South [15], which is happening at the Cakespy Shop [16] here in Seattle on Saturday, May 14th at 11 a.m. I'll be baking for it (something in jars, but of course). Also on Saturday is the Great American Bake Sale
for ?Share Our Strength? at the uptown Metropolitan Market starting at 9:30 a.m. Two bake sales! Seattle is in luck.

To win the package of items from Rakka Deer please leave a comment with this website. You've got until Saturday, May 14th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [17] applies. If you'd like something to chat about answer this question: What is your favorite thing to make for, or buy at, bake sales? Clearly I enjoy making stuff in jars. Alright, good luck!

How-To: Homemade Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

blueberry_pie_icecream.jpg

With summer well underway, we've been consuming our fair share of ice cream. I've always wished we had an ice cream maker to whip up batches of homemade ice cream on our own, and this recipe from She Wears Many Hats makes me want one even more. See how she combines blueberry pie ingredients for a scrumptious frosty treat. [via Bakerella]

May Birthday Giveaway: a CSA share from Juniper Moon Farm

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to say that Juniper Moon Farm [1] has offered a Yarn CSA [2] for one lucky reader, the 2012 Spring Shearing worth $175 (that's some serious yarn). The Yarn CSA works like a farm CSA but instead you get a yield of the scrumptious yarn that is produced from the sheep and goats they lovingly raise. Juniper Moon Farm is amazing run by a small group of people who are dedicated to what they do and are fantastic about sharing what is going on with share holders, visitors, and readers of their blog. The farm was started by Susan, whom I've followed since she started (back then it was the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm, which you might remember if you've been reading my site long enough) and I'm astounded and so pleased to watch how it's grown. If you're not already I encourage you to read the blog [3], follow along as lambs are born in the spring on the LambCams [4], see what the farm dogs [5] are up to, you can attend shearing day [6] and even stay at the farm [7] for a week or long weekend. It's really amazing to watch the farm work all year and then find yarn at your door that reflects all of the care and attention that they put into it. I just want to hug the whole farm. The blog isn't just about the farm, I've loved all the Probably Something You Would Like [8] links posts, her recent pictures from Preakness [9], her famous world's greatest granola recipe [10] and how she went paper towel free on the whole farm [11] (it involves making a lot of your own cloth napkins [12], enough so you always have plenty of clean ones).

Would you like to win this amazing Yarn CSA? If so please leave a comment with this entry and let me know the following: Have you ever spent time on a farm? I spent a few summers on my uncle's farm in Oklahoma, he had cattle, two greyhounds, a small lake with a rope swing, a tiny farmhouse and bales of hay that seemed to be piled taller than the house itself. I loved it there. Ok, you've got until Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [13] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

almost daily photo: April 14th

Today was way better than yesterday, or so I thought. At lunch I dropped off the last document needed for our tax people to do our taxes, I got all the stuff needed to make dinner, I gathered and bagged the recycling for collection tomorrow, I got everything ready to take photographs of the Easter project I have in mind for this year, I did dishes, I washed and chopped kale, I cleaned out the fridge, I cleared the dining room table of miscellaneous mail and I was feeling triumphant and smart (I was listening to The Tobolowsky Files [1], it makes me feel smart) and nearly I felt like I actually had my stuff together until Scott [2] got home and discovered that all of my keys were still in the lock of the door. Just hanging there, forgotten. In my rush to turn off the alarm when I came home I failed to actually remove my keys from the lock. Way to go, me.

Anyhow, the photograph above is a sneak peek at what I'm doing for Easter. Sort of.

Bakesale for Japan tomorrow

[1]

It's 11 p.m. and I'm just finishing my baked goods for the Bakesale for Japan tomorrow. I'm fond of what I made and might have to buy one for myself since I didn't have any left over. I made Jars of Stars, lots of little star shaped cookies. (Pictures later.) It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but I think it was worth it. Here in Seattle it will be at the Cakespy shop (more details [2]). See the Bakesale for Japan [3] page to find if there is one being held near you.

I've got a few days worth of photos to put up but I'm tired and need to pack for a few days of travel, so I'll be back on Monday and catch up then. Hope your weekend is wonderful.

May Birthday Giveaway: ABC poster from Matthew Porter

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Yay! Today I have the ABC Poster [1] from Matthew Porter [2] to give away. Matthew Porter is a Seattle illustrator and childrens book author whose distinctive style has become familiar to our household, we've bought several of his books for our niece and nephews. His wife, Andrea, is the administrative side of the business (and since I work with her in the GBA [3] I can tell you she is a force). They owned the Bluebottle art gallery here in Seattle for eight years. In addition to his books [4] he sells original art [5] and onsies, hoodies and posters in the shop [6]. His most familiar character is a monkey and his book Monkey World [7] is a lot of fun, I have to admit we read through a few times before mailing it off to our niece and nephew. I absolutely love that Matthew offers his top 10 childrens books for inspiration (bottom half of the page), there are a few books there I just barely remember.

If you'd like to win the ABC poster please leave a comment with this entry. You have until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18th to enter, the fine print [8] applies. If you'd like something to mention here is a question to answer: Did you have a book as a kid that you remember to this day? Mine was Dr. Seuss's The First of Octember, because my birthday falls early in October and I was fascinated by the idea that there might be a month in there somewhere I hadn't been told about! Alright, good luck. Closed, thanks for entering!

giveaway: Modern Log Cabin Quilting

I'm so pleased to be showing you Susan Beal's latest book, Modern Log Cabin Quilting [1], and offering a sweet giveaway today. You can read why Susan loves log cabin quilting [2] and view projects from the book made by others at the Flickr group [3].

This book introduces you to log cabin quilts, gives you all the information you need to sew your own, including tools and techniques, and offers a range of projects.

This is the Bright Furrows quilt, I like the cheerful colors. There are a whole range of quilts using both huge blocks and lots of small ones. There are a number of special quilt projects including a t-shirt quilt to save those worn out shirts that hold memories, an Anniversary quilt and the cozy Winter Woolens quilt.

Above is the Northwest Modern quilt, I like how it's random. There is also a whole section on household items like tea towls, aprons, pillow cases and a pincushion.

I like the Red Cross bag which uses both corduroy and cotton fabrics. There are a nuber of bags, including a super simple drawstring bag, a zipper pouch, and a market tote. (A way to use up your fabric stash and make gifts at the same time!)

This Charming Camera Case is easy (and uses some stealth velcro).

I'm thoroughly charmed by the quilts and projects in this book, they are fresh and inspiring. So I'm very happy to have both a copy of the book and a fabric kit to give away. If you'd like to enter please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like please do take the time to share any quilting projects (or disasters) you've undertaken. I'll go first: I've never quilted anything! Clearly I will have to change that very soon. You have until noon Pacific time on Thursday, April 7th to enter. The usual fine print [4] applies. Good luck! The winner as chosen by the Random Number Generator is #45, Emily. Congrats! And thanks to everybody for entering!

And you can charge a bit more than you might think, a good thing when the money is being raised for a great cause. I've previously made cobbler in jars [2], pudding in jars [3] and pies in jars [4]. Cake and cupcakes in jars [5] are also perfect, especially if sold with a bamboo fork or spork attached.

Image above taken by the wonderful Kairu Yao [6] and used with permission, thanks! You can see all of her bakesale photos here [7].

This time I was inspired by these tiny heart cookies [8] which I spied first on Oh Happy Day [9]. I used this Pepperkaker [10] recipe at Dabbler because I knew it would come out crunchy and strong enough to be piled together. I did find myself wishing it was a bit spicier, I might add more black pepper next time. One note: that recipe makes a huge amount, I had to halve all the ingredients to a batch into my Kitchenaid mixer. I switched to the dough hook after the first addition of flour because the dough does get very stiff.

I ran out of time so my very awesome husband Scott [11] made the labels (thanks, you're the best!). We printed them out onto cardstock and cut circles to fit between the pieces of the lid. The back side of the cardstock holds the ingredients list.

I made four small sizes of stars. I had to draw cookie cutters from a few sources to get the small sizes. The smallest on is from a set of aspic cutters [12] (the smallest sized set), the next size up is actually from a Linzer cookie set [13], and the two largerst were from a many stars [14] set. All the cutters I used were from Fox Run as I found I liked the nice sharp angles on those the best. I bought all mine from Home Cake Decorating Supply [15] here in Seattle who always has just what I'm looking for.

This is the size one larger than the tiniest, for scale.

I cut them out and then popped them out from the cutter using the blunt end of a chopstick. No matter what I tried, flouring, oiling, chilling the dough or the cutters, they all needed to be popped back out. It took a while but with some WTF [16] podcasts it went quickly. The cookies don't spread, but they do puff enough when baked to get rid of any marks left by poking them back out of the cookie cutters.

I added non perils to a few batches of the smaller stars. I love non perils. They made the jar look a bit more interesting and didn't add a lot of work for me.

We filled the jars carefully so each one would get a good mix and that was it. If you keep the cardboard box that canning jars come in they make perfect carriers to deliver to the bake sale. I wish I had used jars with smooth sides, it would have been easier to view the star shapes inside.

I think it was a success, I sold three jars before I managed to get them set up on the tables! At the time I'm writing this the Bakesale for Japan [1] is still adding up the total but it's looking like the nationwide effort may have made more than $125K, wow. Thanks to Ciao Samin [18] for getting the whole thing together and thanks to everybody who organized and came to the Seattle bakesale!

May Birthday Giveaway: Embroidery Companion

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm tickled to have a copy of Alicia Paulson's second book Embroidery Companion: Classic Designs for Modern Living [1] to give to one lucky winner. Alicia is one of those people I've known online for almost as long as I've had an internet connection, and whom I'm happy to say is just as awesome and warm in person, and I adore the love and care she puts into all her work. Her take on embroidery shows a fondness for the past but has a modern and cheerful way about it. She also has a delightful blog, Posie Gets Cozy [2] where she talks about food, dogs, gardening and the joys of hammocks. And she produces patterns for sewing, crochet and embroidery as well as offering the occasional carefully compiled craft kits which sell out crazy fast, her latest was the Daisychain ABC Sampler [3], and I love her felt Christmas ornaments [4]. You can find everything at her online shop Rosy Little Things [5].

If you'd like to win the copy of Embroidery Companion please leave a comment with this post and, if you'd like, answer this question: What is the first craft you remember doing? Though my mother has evidence of earlier creations the first thing I remember was using cut fruit as stamps to decorate t-shirts on a rainy afternoon during a vacation. Your turn, you've got until Friday, May 27th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [6] applies. Good luck! Closed, thank you so much for entering!

We'll Miss ReadyMade, and We Value Your Opinions!

readymade1.jpg
Image from The ReadyMade blog

We were all sad to hear the news about ReadyMade Magazine shutting down. Many of us here at CRAFT were loyal readers, and many of us know firsthand what it feels like to go through shutting down a print magazine. Our hearts go our to all of ReadyMade's staff and contributors.

We were lucky - although CRAFT had to stop print publication, we were able to continue with this online version you're reading now. We work hard every day to make it as vibrant and useful as possible by posting great inspiration, exclusive projects and recipes and fun CRAFT videos..

Given the news about ReadyMade, and the number of you who responded to our recent Reader Survey asking us to bring the print version of CRAFT back, I thought this might be a good time to bring up something important.

craft_1.jpg

The very best way to keep CRAFT thriving is to help us make this magazine into everything you want it to be. That means telling us what you like and don't like. It means being an involved reader.

You're always welcome to leave comments on any article we post here, but we also heard you loud and clear in the Reader Survey - our comment system isn't always as easy to use as you'd like. (Don't worry; plans are afoot to change this!)

Keep in mind, though, that if you're on Facebook, it's always easy to drop a comment on our Facebook page. And below each and every post in this online magazine, you'll see a row of social media buttons like the ones right under this paragraph. We watch these numbers closely for signs of what our readers enjoy most. So, if you like something you see here, all you have to do is click your mouse twice to tell us - and, to help spread the word.

socmed_buttons.jpg

You can also help us thrive by subscribing to our content, because we watch our subscriber numbers, too! If you like what we do, you can add us to your RSS reader, get our monthly newsletter, or our daily email, or become a fan on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

Not only that, if you look in the sidebar of our web page, you'll see all our smiling faces and contact information. If you have thoughts on how CRAFT can serve you better, we're here and we're listening. And we want to stick around for a long time. Will you help us do that?

CRAFT Pattern: That Girl! Tank

Banner Craft Podcast

thatgirltank.0.jpg

By Nikol Lohr

With an empire waist, relaxed styling and seed-stitch details to match the summer jacket of the same name, this quick-knitting linen/cotton blend tank is an excellent warm-weather project. Wide straps for bra coverage, extra increases, and short row shaping for bigger bustlines make it as fitting a tank for busty women as it is for their willowy counterparts.

This tank is worked in the round from the top down. Each section is bound off and immediately picked up to add structure and to better offset the seed-stitch details. You can easily shorten the hip-length top to conserve yarn or continue in pattern as long as you like for an A-line sundress. Aside from one side of each strap, it's completely seamless.

Papier-Mache Easter Eggs

[1]

For Easter I made papier-mache polka dotted eggs.

[2]

I made small pinatas using water balloons and tissue paper.

[3]

I filled them with candy, then sealed them shut.

[4]

You can also put toys or notes inside.

[5]

They have to be ripped to open them, which is way fun.

[6]

Click here: Papier-Mache Easter Eggs [7] to find (much) more detailed instructions on how to make them.

Mother Boards as Art Canvases

mother_board_art.jpg

When Joe Dragt's office earmarked some 30 computers to be sent to recycling, he decided to step in and dismantle them himself. He scavenged the mother boards to use as canvases for his paintings.

Seeing the stack of old computers, the idea just struck me...the motherboards can make for a really neat canvas. The complexity and patterns of all the circuits could make for stunning backgrounds. I asked if I could take one computer home for a trial run, and it just blossomed from there.
