May Birthday Giveaway: Grow Great Grub

Today I've got a copy of Grow Great Grub [1]: Organic Food from Small Spaces by Gayla Trail. This book has a perfect combination of the information you need to grow your own food in containers, planting beds or community gardens, what to plant, how to care for it, and heaps of beautiful photographs to inspire you. I'm very intimidated by gardening and I find this book to be comforting. She covers everything I might like to grow but doesn't bury me in too many options. There are even recipes, tips on keeping or preserving and a section on how to can. This book is both a great place to start, and has lots of information for those gardeners who are looking to polish their food growing skills. And if you don't already follow it Gayla's site You Grow Girl [2] is full of great information. Gayla is one of those people whom I've known online for years and years. (I find myself saying that a lot lately!)

If you'd like to win a copy of You Grow Girl please leave a comment with this post. You've got until Tuesday, May 17th at 10am PST to enter, the fine print [3] applies. Here is something to talk about if you'd like: Have you ever eaten anything you grew yourself? I am terrible with plants so the most I've managed is using my own rosemary and thyme, but my dad is a gardener and grows blueberries and wild strawberries (which are delicious). Ok, good luck! Closed! Thanks for entering.

May Birthday Giveaway: Troubadour Tote from Crystalyn Kae

[1]

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Welcome to Wednesday and it's giveaway: a Trourbadour Tote Bag [2] in the color of your choice from Crystalyn Kae. This is an awesome bag, it can fit a laptop (up to a 15" Macbook), has many useful interior pockets (go see the pictures [3]), a zipper top, and a gathered design in front that allows you to stuff the bag should you need (it can hold a water bottle and a pair of shoes, I see possibilities here). I see Crystalyn Kae bags on the shoulders of girls wherever I go in Seattle, her Topstitch Hobo [4] seems to be a favorite (at least from my highly unscientific pole of, well, my observations) and she always has a nice big booth at UCU [5] (a big craft and handmade goods show here in Seattle that is worth traveling for). Crystalyn Kae bags are made from an embossed coated canvas which is lightweight and waterproof (necessary here) and it can even be thrown into the washer. The bags are all made by hand in the US and it's very good construction (I have examined it), have comfortable handles, most of them are vegan (unless otherwise noted), and have perfectly chosen contrasting lining. One of her newest items is the Pleated Clutch [6] and I think I have a crush on it.

If you'd like to win the fabulous Troubadour Tote Bag please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like something to chat about answer this question: Do you prefer your bags in neutrals or bright colors? Me? I have been trying my utmost to buy bags in bright colors since my wardrobe stubbornly, perhaps reliably, stays in the range of black to gray. Having colorful bags means I can accessorize to my mood without thinking too much about it. So far it's working, I think. Alright, you have until 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 19th to enter, the fine print [7] applies. Good luck! Closed, thank you for entering!

Geek Crafts: Light-Up Fashion Roundup

CRAFT: Geek Crafts
LED tank top.jpg

Everyone knows LEDs are the new sequins. Back in 2006, when we started CRAFT, one of the most exciting areas where we saw crafters "transforming traditional crafts" is with sewing soft circuits into clothing. New "smart" materials like conductive thread made it possible to seamlessly blend tech and craft to the awesome effect of light-up fashion. Pictured above is Leah Buechley's LED Tank Top from CRAFT Volume 01. Although quite ambitious for a first-time soft circuit project, we loved that this project showed what was possible: clothing that not only lit up the night, but could be programmed to change pattern. Five years later, the project hasn't lost its cool. Get inspired with the full step-by-step on Make: Projects.

If you're interested in soft circuits and incorporating smart materials in your crafts, Syuzi Pakhchyan's awesome book Fashioning Technology is a great place to start. Syuzi lays out the essentials with simple tutorials on basic techniques, an invaluable image-driven index of materials and tools, followed by an array of projects, like the Rock Star Headphones:

My RSS feed broke, the engine light in my car is on, I was late to meet a friend at the bakery and when I got there I knocked a vase off of a table in a dramatic fashion, the cap of a Sharpie in my bag came off leaving some ugly black spots and when I got home I discovered I have a run in my Spanx. It's only 1:30 in the afternoon. I sincerely hope your day is going better than mine.

update: I also forgot to put a title on this post, which I've just fixed. Hey, if you are looking at this in a feed reader and cannot see the moody photo of the offending Sharpie let me know and I'll try to figure out why RSS might still be broken. My thanks!

May Birthday Giveaways!

Hi, hello, hi there. This May marks the tenth year of Not Martha, ten years! A whole decade! To celebrate I'm holding giveaways each weekday in May filled with stuff I love from people I know. It's gonna be fun.

Looking back at the archives I see the first post was on May 22nd, 2001 and I only posted six things that month. The very first post to this site was about a kit that helps you put gifts inside of balloons [1] (sadly, a dead link), the second post was about a long time love of mine the Meathead [2] (miraculously it's still there [3], it's a plastic skull covered with red jello then layers of cold cuts to be served at Halloween and the reason I called my meatloaf hand the Meat Hand [4]), my third post was a list of stuff I liked [5] including retro video games, cookbooks and dishes made of sugar. Posts four [6], five [7] and six [8] are regarding Fluevog shoes that leave hoof prints, gasses that preserve a half empty bottle of wine, and the article in Salon that mentions a magazine that would be published sometime later that year, it was called "Readymade". Taking just the first six posts into consideration I'm gonna go ahead and say this here site hasn't changed much in the past decade. It really doesn't seem like that long.

Each giveaway will take entries for about 24 hours and the first one will be tomorrow morning. Good luck everybody!

Antique Doll Head Planters

doll_head_planters1.jpg

Retired high school art teacher Dolores Duenez makes interesting (and slightly unnerving) planters out of antique doll heads.

A few years ago, I was given a box of unfinished doll heads from a doll maker's estate sale. I used some of the heads for still-life set ups in the classroom, and the rest I placed in my garden. The following spring, plants were growing from the doll heads. I decided then that doll heads would make strange and interesting planters.

She sells them in her Etsy shop, Plants on the Brain.

By day, this honeycomb pendant by Blend Creations looks like a nature-based piece of art. But if you have a tinkering emergency, voila! It's also a functional wrench. The hexagonal holes are sized to fit 8, 10, 12 and 14mm bolts, and the smallest one will even fit a standard cordless drill bit. Embrace your inner MacGyver!

We went to Uneeda Burger [1] here in Seattle to try to see if we could tell the difference between the regular patty and the grass-fed patty. We couldn't. But Lindy West could and her hilarious review [2] is worth reading even if you don't live close enough to try this place: "This cow ate only sweet grasses and sunshine. This cow was massaged daily by sexy cow concubines. This cow slept each night on a feather bed, spooning with the emperor of Whidbey Island himself. This cow moos rainbows."

How-To: Thread Sketching

Erin of Elysian Studios created a wonderfully simple tutorial for using your sewing machine as a sketching tool. Add a darning foot, drop your feed dogs, and start drawing with thread. (Don't worry, she provides a lot more detail than that right over here.

I love how she's layered paper and fabric into a collage and then sketched over the layers. Couldn't you see an amazing set of placemats or a custom lamp shade made from this technique?

Flower Petal Stained Glass Windows

I love the fresh, playful feeling of these contact paper flower petal stained glass windows from Jean of The Artful Parent. As she mentions in the comments, she arranged the petals on the contact paper and then sandwiched them directly on to the glass. If you were worried about the contact paper not coming off easily, you could also try sandwiching them between two pieces of contact paper and then hang them in a window.

Here at Maker Faire!

craftbooth.JPG

The Craft team is (mostly) united here in San Mateo for Maker Faire, putting the last touches on everything before the doors open to the public this morning. Here's a photo Diane took of the demo area in Expo Hall last night; doesn't it look so peaceful and serene? Not for long! The fun starts at 10 a.m.

Be sure to check out the Craft Stage schedule, and if you're planning to come, we also recommend you follow @MakerFaire and @FaireTraffic on Twitter for eye candy and important announcements.

Hope to see you here!

Beading to Beat Autism

beading-to-beat-autism2.jpg

You may have seen this determined young woman on The Ellen Show in 2008. Michala Riggle, then age 10, was busy raising $200,000.00 to help her local hospital incorporate an experimental treatment that she'd seen work well for her younger brother Evan, who has autism.

Michala reached her goal by making beaded bracelets and selling them for donations. She recruited volunteers to help her make and sell thousands of them. And together, they raised over $300,000.00.

And now, she's setting her sights even higher: she wants to build the most comprehensive Autism Research and Treatment Center in the world. The price tag: $300 million dollars! And she has a three-year plan to get it done through beaded bracelet sales. Want to help?

Today my Here At Hogwarts [1] comic arrived, it was drawn by Lucy Knisley [2] and the cover was hand printed by Nora Renick-Rinehart [3]. It was a small Christmas present to myself that I ordered early through their Horribly Heartbroken at Hogwarts [4] project on Kickstarter, but now you can get one for yourself any time you'd like right here [5].

p.s. Whether or not you fell down the hole of reading the Twilight books the series of comics by Lucy Knisley titled My Lost Weekend In the Meyer [6] is hilarious. Go read.

How-To: A Doormat Inspired by The Seventh Doctor

CRAFT: Geek Crafts

doctor_who_mat_step14b.jpg

By Jessica Wilson

I'm a fairly new convert to the world of Doctor Who. Trying to wrap my head around all the mythology has me spinning like a top. If there is one thing I have learned, it's that The Doctor, no matter the face, is a man with style. From the Fourth Doctor's seemingly never-ending scarf, to the Fifth Doctor's celery stick, or the Tenth Doctor's Converse and suits, them Doctors sure knew how to mix things up.

Recently I have discovered the awesomeness of the Seventh Doctor's sweater vest. Have you seen it? It is a mishmash of garishness at its best, with a multitude of red question marks patterned about a bright yellow background complete with pale-blueish green zigs that zag about. So inspired, I conjured up this easy-peasy Doctor Who doormat just for you. After all, I am a sucker for off-kilter primary colors.

Old Books Make Room Dividers

paperback_partition_6_normal.jpg

This is a beautiful idea for a rather hidden waste problem. From London designer Lucy Norman:

"More books are printed every year, read and discarded. Even though many are taken to charity shops, they mostly go unsold and the charities have to pay for the books to be sent to landfill. For example 10,000 books a week from one charity will go to waste. There is currently no infrastructure set up to recycle the paper from books because the paper is low grade and the glue on the spine must be removed. The Paperback Partition is made from this waste, creating an aesthetically pleasing and interesting divide in a room. It provides both good heat insulation, and acoustic insulation. Research showed that most people felt that books as objects were beautiful and they enjoyed their solidness, colour and texture, which the partition shows off"

I also love the subtle tone-on-tone mosaic created by the books all being at different stages of yellowing. See other book partition styles over at Lula Dot.
